CAPPIUS, KAPPIUS, HASELHORST, LINGEMANN  (1 Jun 2013)

I am looking for (information on) any CAPPIUS/ KAPPIUS family members that are related to Reverend William A. CAPPIUS, who was pastor at St Rose of Lima in Crofton, NE, from 1932 to 1945.

The Reverend was born in Bochum-Grumme, Germany in 1885. Both of his parents were German. His mother was Gertrud CAPPIUS/ KAPPIUS, nee HASELHORST. He had at least one brother, Josef CAPPIUS/ KAPPIUS Sr. Fr William was ordained 13 August 1913, and immigrated to the USA in the same year. Not sure where he went first when he came to the USA, but before he came to Crofton, NE, he was at St. Joseph’s Church in Dodge, NE. Fr William visited Germany in 1927, his permanent address at this point was Dodge, NE. Fr William passed away on 8 January 1945 and is buried in St Rose cemetery in, Crofton, NE. Fr William served in WWI.

Fr William was my great uncle. My father was Josef (Jupp) KAPPIUS (1907-1967), son of Josef CAPPIUS/ KAPPIUS Sr., Fr William's brother. Both spellings of the surname, CAPPIUS and KAPPIUS, are found on family documents and pictures from the beginning of the 20th century, so the spelling wasn't cut in stone at that time. As for his first name, chances are Fr William was christened "Wilhelm" and Americanized his first name after immigrating to the USA.

Of my grandparents, Josef Sr and Antonia CAPPIUS/ KAPPIUS, I know very little. Grandmother Antonia CAPPIUS/ KAPPIUS, nee LINGEMANN, was born 5 March 1882 and passed away 8 December 1924. My grandparents divorced when my father was still a child and my grandfather married again. I do not know the name of his second wife. My father was born 3 November 1907 in Bochum, Germany, and he had two sisters, at least one of whom was a half sister. One of my father's sisters was called Hanni LINGEMANN. She too has passed away probably 20 years ago, but I do not remember when exactly.

Fr William CAPPIUS and my father/ his nephew Josef (Jupp) KAPPIUS had good contact to each other and wrote letters. Fr William spelled my father's name as "Joseph CAPPIUS" on the envelopes.

I am maintaining a website in memory of my father on which is published what I found so far about Uncle Fr William, and I hope to find more, also pictures, of the American branch of the family.
The website URL is www.juppkappius.de

There is ample information about my father (including a biography) and also pictures on the site. Josef (Jupp) KAPPIUS was a resistance fighter against Nazi Germany during the Nazi regime, and afterwards a social democratic German politican until he passed away on 30 December 1967. He was interned at the Internment Camp "Orange", N.S.W., Australia for a couple of years during WWII (1939-1942), and Fr William wrote letters to him there, too.
