DR. JOHN T. BRUCE

Dr. John T. Bruce, son of John and Lillie Tarpenning Bruce, was born in Verdigre September 24, 1892. He grew up in the community and attended the public schools. Prominent in athletics, he won honors in wrestling. He was also an ardent football and baseball player.

After graduation he did various kinds of work, including operating a pool hall and being a partner in a drayline. Then he worked his way through the Kansas City Veterinary College, graduating in 1918. After receiving his degree, he enlisted in the cavalry and served two years, leaving the service with the rank of second lieutenant.

After his discharge, he established a veterinary practice in Verdigre. On April 27, 1920, he married Blanche Clark of Niobrara, a nurse, and with Verdigre connections of her own: she was the daughter of Dr. Willard Kingsley and Marie Kalal Clark. Dr. John T. and Blanche Bruce had three children: Margaret (Mrs. Laurane Mastalir), Mary Ann (Mrs. Roy Williams), and John.

Prominent in civic affairs, he served on the Village Board of Trustees for several years and on the Verdigre Township Board for five years. He was also chairman of the Knox County Democratic Committee for four years.

Dr. Bruce was in veterinary practice for 28 years. During the 30s, he was in government service, carrying out animal disease eradication projects in various Nebraska counties.

He died suddenly May 7, 1946.
