THE ANTON DOZBABA FAMILY

Anton A. Dozbaba was born in Bohemia in 1871 and in 1877 he came to America with his parents. They settled in Atwood, Kansas. He married Bertha Ruda on February 13, 1899, and they had eight children: Mrs. Anna Stehno and Mrs. Mary Horinek of Atwood, Kansas, Agnes, and Mrs. Beatrice Hackworth of San Mateo, California, and three sons: Frank and Anton Dozbaba of Atwood, Kansas, and one who died in infancy.

The family moved to Plattsmouth, Nebraska, and in 1902 to Verdigre, Nebraska. Here Mr. Dozbaba was a prominent businessman and Village Clerk for 14 years. He was in partnership with his brother-in-law Joseph Ruda, in a hardware and dry goods store.

Anton sold his interests in the store to Joe Maly. In 1916, after selling their home, they moved back to Atwood, Kansas, where their parents, brother, and sisters lived. The house and property they sold were described in this way: “The residence property consists of a tract of land containing 12 large full front lots and a two-story house, size 26x26 and other improvements, all fenced and cross fenced with good fence netting wire and described as part of Out Lots F and G, Verdigre, Nebr.”

Anton died in Atwood, Kansas, June 24, 1923, and Mrs. Dozbaba died September 17, 1966.
