JULIUS AND AGNES [SEDIVY] FARNIK

[pg 244 PHOTO Wedding picture of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Farnik, attendants are Rosie Sedivy and Edwin Sedivy]

Julius Farnik was born March 26, 1892, in Vratislavko, Tisnov, Moravia. While he was growing up he helped his father with tailoring and making coffins.

At the age of 18, he decided to come to the United States. It took him 18 days to get to the U. S. via sailboat. He settled in Knox County, Nebraska, and worked for a few years on farms in the Pischelville area. He also attended the Vonasek school and learned to talk, read, and write English. His teacher was Mr. Van Hoff.

He had a brother Frank and sister Mary in Moravia. His sister married Joe Koutek. He lost track of his brother Frank.

In September of 1916 Julius married Agnes Sedivy and they started farming in the Lynch and Monowi area. They had five children: Marie, Leonard, Fred, George, and Elsie. Later they moved to New Raymer, Colorado, with their family. There they farmed for a few years near his cousin Jacob Farnik. Then they moved back to Verdigre and for awhile he worked for cousin Joe Farnik. In the 1930s he worked for the WPA. Julius later began doing carpentry work and helped build the courthouse in Center. He also did some carpentry in Wausa and Alliance. Then he got a job in Richmond, California, working in the shipyards. Mrs. Farnik, Fred, and Leonard moved to Richmond, too. After several years in the shipyards, he worked as a bellboy in a hotel.

In 1966 his wife Agnes passed away at the age of 73. He retired from his work in 1967. He married Carol Fowler and they resided in Oakland, California, for the rest of their lives.

His daughter Marie married George Mlady and they have a daughter Norma who was married to Michael Darr. Norma Darr now lives in Boulder, Colorado, and works in Denver for Pacific Service System in the computer department.

His son Fred married Mary Santos, they had no children.

Julius Farnik had some bad luck in his family. His son George died in infancy, daughter Elsie died at the age of five, and son Leonard died at the age of 60. Leonard, who never married, fell from a tree while squirrel hunting and was left an invalid. Julius second wife Carol died in Oakland, California, October 29, 1981, at the age of 94. Then he passed away on March 16, 1982, in Oakland, California, having reached the age of 90.
