WILLIAM HENRY AND ANNA [DOUGHERTY] HINES

William Henry Hines was born November 2, 1873, at Independence, Iowa. He came to Knox County, Nebraska, with his parents Daniel Alexander and Rachel Ellen (Crooks) Hines in 1878. They homesteaded in the Grimton community on the Southwest Quarter of Section 33, Township 30, Range 6 West. They built a small log house and barn on the southwest corner of this quarter and lived there until they built their permanent home.

Henry, as he was always known, lived on this land and the quarter section northwest of there all his life; the land is still in the Hines family. His parents moved to Orchard in 1909 and lived there until their deaths. Daniel passed away September 20, 1917, and Rachel on October 1, 1936.

Both are buried in Grimton Cemetery. Henry married Anna Marie Dougherty on May 11, 1896. Their children are Grace Mathilda, Lloyd Henry, Leo William, Loula Ann (Hamilton), Laura Maud (Mott), Lillie Mae (Millie), Lucille Agusta (Patent), Luella Bessie (Grosse) and Lavaine Archie.

Henry’s wife Anna was born to John and Catherine (McGrane) Dougherty on February 6, 1879, in Crawford, Co., Iowa, and came to Knox County, Nebraska, in 1893 when John had traded his farm in Iowa for one next to the Hines farm in Knox County. Anna passed away at her home December 10, 1929, and Henry passed away at his home May 17, 1950. Both are buried in the Grimton Cemetery.

When Henry and Anna were married, they lived on the same quarter section on which his parents lived. In about 1905 they with their family, moved to a place on the quarter section northwest of there. Henry had built the buildings on the place before they moved, and they lived here the rest of their lives. Henry and Anna were prominent citizens in the Grimton community and were the best of neighbors. Henry was active in community affairs and held numerous civic offices.
