THE JOHN HIRSH FAMILY

John Hirsh was born in Bohemia on October 17, 1862. He came to America in 1899 to visit his two sisters living at Table Rock, Nebraska. He became acquainted with Antonia Varlicek of New York, New York, through a Bohemian magazine Amerikan. Antonia was born in Bohemia September 1, 1876, and came to New York with her mother at the age of 18. After corresponding with Antonia for awhile, he convinced her to come to Table Rock and become his wife. She arrived by train on April 15, 1900, and they were married the next day. John was a railroad worker and three children were born to them at Table Rock: Mildred, Frank, and Rudolph. Rudolph passed away at the age of one.

In 1907 they moved to Horseheads, New York, to be near her relatives. There two daughters were born to them - Helen and Julia. John didn’t like farming in New York and heard that Verdigre was a Czech community so he came here with his family by train in 1912. They started farming on the Havlicek farm north of Verdigre and their children attended the Verdigre Public School.

When their son Frank married Rose Juracek in September of 1925, they retired from farming and moved to Verdigre. They purchased a house east of the railroad tracks were they lived for 20 years. John passed away on October 16, 1945, a day before his 83rd birthday. His wife Antonia then made her home with her daughter Mildred and Anton Julis in Verdigre and Niobrara. Antonia passed away July 19, 1960, in the Creighton Care Centre at the age of 84.

Mildred, their eldest daughter, married Anton Julis on January 27, 1920. They were parents of two children, Rudolph and Mildred. Mildred married Edward Krupicks in December of 1941. Rudolph married Blanche Vakoc in June of 1942. Rudolph passed away in December of 1983.

Their son Frank married Rose Juracek on September 22, 1925. They had five children and lived on the Havlicek farm until 1944 when they moved to the Bloomfield area. They purchased a farm northwest of Bloomfield in 1946. Their oldest daughter, Marcella Hirsh Harrom, and husband Louie are living in Redding, California. Marvin and wife Charlotte live at Newell, Iowa. Clarence lives at Bloomfield. Donald and his wife Arlene live in Omaha where Darlene also resides.

Frank passed away in May of 1979 and Rose now lives with her son Clarence.

Helen Hirsh married Tom Hamak at Loyalton, South Dakota, in July of 1931. They were blessed with eight children: Leonard, Robert, Maxine, Barbara, James, Patricia, Gordon and John. All married and live in South Dakota except John who lives in Texas.

Tom passed away in 1973, and Helen lives in Ipswich, South Dakota.

Julia Hirsh married Herman Kurtz at Omaha in November of 1933. They had three children: Richard and his wife Donna live at Woodbridge, Virginia. Shirley and husband Dan Pankovsky live in Littleton, Colorado. Dorothy and husband Jim Dropinski reside in Omaha.
