MIKE J. AND KATIE [DOBRICHOVSKY] HRBEK

Mike J. Hrbek, son of Matej Hrbek, Sr., and Rozina Safranek Hrbek, was born February 24, 1872, on the farmstead west of Pischelville, Nebraska. He attended school at Pischelville where, in a few short terms, he acquired all the education that was offered in the early days. Early in life he took to the ways of farm life. He well remembered hearing of the attack of the unfriendly Indians upon the homestead of a neighbor and the killing of their two children.

When Mike was 27 years old, he married Katie Dobrichovsky on September 9, 1899. Katie Dobrichovsky, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vaclav Dobrichovsky, was born November 25, 1875, in Bohemia. At the age of six, Katie came to America with her parents, brothers, and sisters, and located in the Pischelville community, where she attended District No. 7 school.

Some years crops were so poor that Mike had to work at different farms. As their family grew up, more land and machinery were purchased. Mike farmed all his life on the homestead where he was born. He passed away on June 9, 1946. Katie stayed on the farm for a few years with her son Charlie. Then she moved in with her son Joe where she resided until her death on September 30, 1957.

They enjoyed a dance in the Pischelville Hall on the third Sunday in May. The afternoon was usually for children and the evening was for everyone. If they danced, children were treated to candy and later ice cream. Their concern was that the rain would come and ruin the dance. As time went on the crowds became small and the dance was held only in the afternoon; finally, not at all.

Mike died of cancer on June 9, 1946, and Katie passed away September 30, 1957. Both are buried at the Bohemia National Cemetery at Pischelville, Nebraska.

The children of Mike J. and Katie Hrbek are as follows: Marion, born 1900, married Henry Ruzicka; Charlie Hrbek, born in 1901, never married; Joe Hrbek (1903-1976) married Rose Soukup (1915-1974), Martha Hrbek (1906) married Ernest Louis Hrbek (1913-1957), Walter Hrbek (1909-1910), and Lottie Hrbek (1912-1982) who married Joe Forman (1908).
