THE ICKLER FAMILY

Rudolph Ickler sailed from Germany to New York in 1871 at the age of 17. This was 15 years before the famous Statue of Liberty was erected to welcome the immigrants to America. His brother Johann (John) had come over in 1869 at the age of 19 and eventually homesteaded a farm near West Point, Nebraska. Rudolph, too, settled in West Point to be near his brother. John moved to Creighton in 1880.

John and Rudolph were born in Allendorf, Germany, in the state of Hesse. Their parents were Siebert and Catharina (Reitz) Ickler. Allendorf is a small farming village and there is still an Ickler living on the farm where John and Rudolph and their seven brothers and sisters were born.

Rudolph bought a farm near Brunswick, Nebraska, and married Minnie Kumm.. Born in Bruesedwitz-Pommerania, Germany, she came to America in 1882 at the age of 23. Rudolph and Minnie were married in 1888, the first couple to be married in the Zion Lutheran Church in Creighton. They moved from Brunswick to a farm 12 miles west of Creighton in 1900 and in 1915 moved to Creighton where they lived the rest of their lives. They had seven children: Louisa (Faith), Henry, Alvina (Kyriss), Frederick, Anna (Jost), Dora (Strope) and John.

Frederick (Fred) Ickler was born March 9, 1891, and married Velva Butterfield on October 24, 1912, at Center, Nebraska. She was born May `10, 1892. They farmed west of Creighton in the Venus vicinity. They had three sons and ten daughters: Gerald; Alice (Jackson), Ione (Thelander-Luber), Dixie (McMahon), Russell, Marceline (Schwager), Violet (Schwager), Deloris (Walton), Betty (Klusman), Dorothy (Park), Dale, Donna (Knapp), and Raedean (Trofholz). Fred Ickler died in 1964 and Velva in 1966. Alice (Mrs. Vincent Jackson) died in 1975.

Russell died in 1981. He married Marion Walton and they had four children: Stanley, Marvalene (Mrs. Philip Rudloff - she died in 1974), Eugene, and Nancy (Ms. Gary Vesely). All four graduated from Verdigre High School. Gary and Nancy live in Verdigre and run the bank in Winnetoon. They have two children: Ryan and Bonnie Jo.

Dale lives in Verdigre and his son Dusty is a Junior in high school. Dale also has a daughter Jill (Mrs. Brian Sandoz) living in Verdigre.

Gerald married Ione Darr in 1935 and they farmed about 1 ½ miles south of the Walnut store. She passed away in August of 1952 after a lengthy illness. In September of 1953, he married Doris Hoffart Kleinschmidt and they continued farming the same place. In 1985, they moved to Verdigre and Gerald was a substitute mail carrier on Route 2 out of Verdigre for 44 years. He had just become the regular carrier for that route on June 1, 1985. Their sons are James (Jim) and Daniel (Danny). Jim is married to Kathy Jaros and they have two sons, Jeff and Kory. Both attend Verdigre Public School and are in the tenth and eighth grades, respectively. Danny is married to Sheryl Judy Nez and their sons are Stacy and Cody. They live in Norfolk. Gerald Ickler died January 29, 1987.
