ERNEST AND ANNA [DEMERATH] JELINEK

[pg 286 PHOTO Ernest and Ann Jelinek at 40th Wedding Anniversary on June 20, 1984]

Ernest Jelinek was born on December 9, 1917, to Joe and Emma (Sukup) Jelinek southwest of Verdigre. He attended country school and then the Verdigre Public School. He farmed with his dad and only brother, Alvin.

Ernest married Anna Demerath, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Demerath of rural Creighton, on June 20, 1944. This date also marked the 20th wedding anniversary of his parents.

Ernest and Anna lived on the farm with his parents until they moved to their own farm one-half mile south. They are the parents of two children, Leonard and Vivian.

Leonard Jelinek graduated from Verdigre High School in 1966. He was a member of the Verdigre FFA Chapter and won many awards and ribbons for his crops and mechanics. In 1967 he had the honor of becoming a State Farmer. He was also a member of the U. S. Army National Guard. On August 4, 1973, Leonard married Rebecca Havlicek and they later moved to a farm (called the old Balleweg place) east of his parents. Ernest Jelinek had purchased the farm from Joe Somr several years before. Leonard continues to farm with his father. Leonard and Rebecca have three children, Melanie, Michael, and Diane.

Vivian Jelinek graduated from Verdigre High School in 1970. She went on to school at Okmulgee, Oklahoma to take a course in key punch, and then got a job at the National Bank of Omaha, Omaha, Nebraska. On September 17, 1971, she became the bride of Alan Goldsberry in Omaha. They have two sons, Douglas and Aaron, and now live at Aurora, Colorado.

Ernest served on the Verdigre Co-op Board for sixteen years, retiring following his heart attack and open heart surgery in 1983.

Ernest and Anna continue to farm and raise registered Hereford cattle.
