JAN [JOHN] AND JOSEPHINE [BARTAK] SKALICKY

Jan Skalicky was born in the year 1830 in Austria. For twelve years he served in the Austrian army. His wife, Josephine Bartak, was born March 20, 1832, in Bohemia.

John and Josephine were married somewhere in Europe. To this union were born six children. Mary, born in 1860, married Anton Houzvicka, and passed away November 9, 1886; Joe, born January 10, 1863, married Emilie Herma on January 8, 1884, and passed away July 7, 1932; Anna was born May 10, 1867, married Joseph Jelinek, Jr., on August 4, 1889, and passed away August 31, 1930; Fannie, born December 24, 1868, married Frank Novacek on April 27, 1891, and passed away October 26, 1949; Antoinette, born August 3, 1871, married Frank Ellis on September 30, 1899, and passed away June 23, 1942; and Josephine, who was born April 5, 1877, married Frank Sokol on February 20, 1905, and passed away October 3, 1963.

In 1879, the Skalicky family immigrated to America and landed in New York. Later they traveled, probably by train, to Yankton, South Dakota. On July 4, 1882, the Skalickys arrived at Niobrara, Nebraska, and settled on a homestead nearby. Later they moved near Lynch, Nebraska, and lived by their daughter and son-in-law, Joseph and Anna Jelinek.

Again, they moved and located at Walnut, Nebraska, about a mile from the Jelineks. During the time John and Josephine were in America, it is believed that they farmed.

John passed away August 14, 1909, and afterwards Josephine lived at the Jelineks until her death on April 20, 1916. Both are buried at the Jelen Cemetery where four of their children are also buried.
