Martha Holan married Leonard Sukup on June 14, 1938, in the St. Wenceslaus Church, Verdigre, Nebraska. Leonard and Martha had three children: Ethel, Rosalie, and Richard. They lived in the Walnut community in Jefferson Township on Maria Sukup’s homestead until Leonard’s death in the spring of 1980.

Ethel Louise (Sukup) Kushinsky graduated from St. Ludger Academy in Creighton, Nebraska, in 1958. She attended business college in Omaha, Nebraska, and now works for AT&T in Omaha where she has held her present secretarial position for the past 27 years.

Rosalie (Sukup) Wakefield also graduated from St. Ludger Academy in 1959. She attended the College of St. Mary in Omaha for two years and then obtained a job in the television promotion department at WOW-TV in Omaha. She also worked at the Sisters of Mercy Provincial House in Omaha. Her husband, Richard Wakefield, worked for Redfield Printing Co. and Douglas County before they moved to Beaverton, just west of Portland, in Oregon. He presently works as a Senior Programmer Analyst for Tektronix. Their children are Bernadette Wakefield, who attends St. Mary of the Valley High School in Beaverton, and Daniel Wakefield, a student at St. Pius X Grade School. Mr. Wakefield served in the U. S. Marines in Okinawa during World War II.

Richard A. Sukup graduated from St. Ludger Academy in 1962. He attended Milford Trade School, Milford, Nebraska, for two years specializing in mechanics and electronics. In 1965 he enlisted in the Nebraska National Guard. Since 1968 he has worked at AT&T in Omaha. He is married to Sheryl (Reeson) Sukup, formerly of West Point, and they have a son, Chad W. Sukup. Sheryl attended business college in Lincoln and worked for AT&T. They currently reside in Fremont, Nebraska, where their son attends Fremont Junior High.

Leonard M. Sukup was born in the Walnut community on November 21, 1913. He was the oldest son of Joseph W. Sukup and attended elementary school in the Walnut community, then St. Ludger’s Academy in Creighton.

Leonard was on the school board of District No. 26 for 24 years (from 1940 to 1963). He also was a seed corn dealer for over 35 years. Leonard belonged to the catholic church and Knights of Columbus, Verdigre, Nebraska, and served on the election board in Jefferson Township.

Leonard, 66, died April 17, 1980, in Omaha, Nebraska, during open heart surgery. He is buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Verdigre.

Leonard and Martha lived on his great-grandmother Maria’s homestead until his death. His wife, Martha, and the three children still own this homestead which has been in the Sukup family over 100 years. The Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award was presented to the “Marie Sukup Homestead” by the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben in 1980.
