FRANK AND MARIE [DVORAK] TICHY, JR.

Frank Tichy, Jr., son of Frank Tichy, Sr., and Mary Novak Tichy, was born at Jankov u Votice in Bohemia on November 30, 1856, by his own claim. He died at Niobrara on January 2, 1936.

In April of 1870, he came to L’Eau Qui Court County with his parents, brothers, and a sister. According to his autobiography, he worked for five years as a cowboy: “As many as 30,000 cattle I helped drive and herd from Mexico and Texas to Ft. Robinson, Fort Randall, and other points where an army of soldiers were at watch to keep the Indians from making a raid on the white race.”

When he was of age, he filed a claim on land located in Sparta Township.

On February 3, 1878, Frank Tichy was married to Marie Dvorak (November 2, 1860-March 15, 1926) who had come to the county with her younger brother and widowed mother, both of whom perished in a prairie fire in March of 1879.

The couple had eight children. Louis was born February 3, 1879. Sophie on February 3, 1880, and Charles on October 27, 1882. These three children died of diphtheria in 1884. The next child, also named Sophie, was born June 7, 1886. Blinded by scarlet fever when less than a year old, she was known as a singer. She survived an attack of pneumonia in 1918 but it so weakened her that she died May 3, 1919. Leon was born on January 13, 1888. After serving in the army in World War I, he returned and married Mildred Haines in December of 1919. This unhappy marriage ended in divorce. On New Year’s Eve December 31, 1922, he died when a supposedly malfunctioning gun went off.

Albin was born December 30, 1890, and died April 28, 1933. On October 14, 1919, he married Rose Kotrba. The couple had three children: Georgia, Reuben, and Shirley. After his death Rose Kotrba Tichy married Albin’s cousin, Joseph Divis, Jr.

Lydia was born probably on September 21, 1892, and died on October 28, 1972. On February 8, 1921, she married a widower, John Genser. The couple’s six children include William, Eleanor, Mary Ann, Raymond, Gladys, and Janice.

Charles, the second of that name, was born, according to his obituary, on October 25, 1897, and died August 17, 1974. On July 2, 1925, he married Marie Zach. The marriage was childless.

Frank Tichy and his wife retired to Niobrara where they spent the rest of their lives. They are buried in L’Eau Qui Court Cemetery at Niobrara.
