THOMAS E. AND MARIE [GROELING] TIKALSKY

Thomas E. Tikalsky was born December 7, 1883, at Verdigre, Nebraska. He was the eighth known child of Mr. and Mrs. John Tikalsky.

Thomas grew to manhood on the family homestead north of Verdigre and attended the Verdigre schools. He was also enrolled at Fremont Normal for one year.

On February 26, 1907, he married Marie Agusta Groeling, daughter of Herman L. Groeling and Mary Louise (Bosse) Groeling of the Walnut community. To this union five children were born.

The family first took up residence in Verdigre where Tom barbered for two years.

From Verdigre they moved to Meade County, South Dakota, where he established a homestead. They lived there from 1909-1911. Because of the drought, they discontinued their life in South Dakota and purchased the original Tikalsky homestead north of Verdigre. They lived there from 1911 to 1919. Mr. Tikalsky then sold out and purchased a farm in the Walnut community located southwest of Verdigre. He farmed there until 1953. During this time he was supervisor of roads in Knox County, District 3, from 1941 to 1949. He was also most active in the school system.

Mr. Tikalsky retired in 1953. He and his wife returned to Verdigre and purchased an acreage on the original homestead where they lived their remaining years.

Mr. Tikalsky was a 60-year member of the ZCBJ Lodge of Verdigre and was also a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge No. 87 of Niobrara, Nebraska.

Mrs. Tikalsky died November 6, 1960, and Mr. Tikalsky died November 2, 1965. They are both buried at the Riverside Cemetery across the Verdigre Creek east of Verdigre.

The following are the five children of Thomas and Marie Agusta Tikalsky.

Chester Groeling was born December 17, 1907, and died February 4, 1987 at Verdigre.

Arnold Richard was born January 1, 1909, and died April 10, 1985 at Sturgis, South Dakota. He married Gladys Boelter in 1946 and they had two sons, Robert and Dale.

Margaret Louise was born May 17, 1910, and died June 28, 1957, at Norfolk, Nebraska. She married Louis J. Tomjack in 1939. Margaret had four children: Peggy, Harold, Carol, and Kay.

Ione Gertrude was born September 13, 1911, and died January 10, 1952, at Norfolk, Nebraska. She married Roy Cederburg in 1931. Ione had four children: James, William, Lillian and Jerry.

Gerald was born November 22, 1914, and died July 18, 1975, in Sterling Heights, Michigan. He married Lois Roberts (Pope) in the mid-forties. Gerald had a stepson William Roberts, who died June 17, 1975, in Detroit, Michigan.
