COOK, WARREN, BUTTERFIELD

I am seeking information regarding my great, great grandfather Anthony Reis COOK. He was born 8 August, 1842 at LeRoy Township OH (near Cleveland). On 15 August, 1862, barely 20 years of age, he enlisted in the 23rd Wisconsin Volunteers, Infantry, I Company. Much of his tour of duty was in the southern states of Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Most of his companions in arms who died in service to the union succombed to diseases such as malaria rather than battle injuries. In fact the Regiment lost 1 officer and 40 enlisted men to battle while 5 officers and 262 enlisted men died from illness. On 4 July, 1865 the regiment was mustered out near Mobile, Alabama and on 5 July they headed home. They arrived at Madison, Wisconsin on 16 July and recieved final payment on 24 July, 1865.

On 1 October, 1865, Anthony married Mary E. WARREN at Portland, Wisconsin. She was born in New York. Nothing more is known of her. The couple had 3 sons: Jesse born 9 July, 1876 in Iowa, Willie George born 5 November, 1877 at Walnut Grove, Knox Co , NE, and Guy Nellis born in 1879 at Walnut Grove. While the boys were young, their mother left the family home. The exact circumstances are not known. The story goes that she took the boys with her, but Anthony fetched them from the back of a covered wagon and brought them back to Walnut. One thing is certain, there was never much discussion of Mary E WARREN COOK after this event.

Jesse died 7 October, 1892 at the age of 16, probably from appendicitis. Willie George COOK married Rosa May BUTTERFIELD 23 December, 1896 at Niobrabra Nebraska. They had five children: Orval Anthony, Bessie Jane, Lela May, Gladys Hazel and Grace Alma. Grace was my Grandma. Guy Nellis married Hila BUTTERFIELD, a cousin of Rosa May.

Anthony must have talked very little about his life as a child or young man for virtually nothing is known about him. If anyone has information about him, his parents or siblings, his wife or the circumstances of their parting, or any related info I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks.
Debbie Woodworth
