THE BAER FAMILY
The Baer family lived in Verdigre for years. George, better known as
“Melly Baer,” worked on the railroad. He married Minnie Sanders on
October 25, 1904. They lived in a railroad section house until he
was transferred to Creighton. They had two daughters and eight sons.
Ruby Baer married Stanley Kroupa (both deceased). Bernice (deceased)
worked in O’Neill and on the “Verdigre Citizen” paper for years. She
met and later married Steve Orszag and moved to Ohio.
Three of the eight sons died. George Melvin Baer died in infancy.
Walter LeRoy died at age one, and J. Earl died in 1938 at the age of
18 or 19. Willis (deceased) married Irma Krumm and moved to a small
acreage in Creighton. Willis left there and went to Omaha and became
a bricklayer by trade. Gerald Baer (deceased) married Sophie Bennar
and farmed for years. They later sold out and tried other
professions. He and his wife worked in Cherokee Mental Health in
Iowa as aides. Rolon, Melvin, and Norman entered the armed services.
When Rolon returned, he went to Washington State where he worked on
the Grand Coulee Dam. Melvin (deceased) went to Detroit to work as a
foreman in a plant. Norman became a barber after returning home and
later went to live in Waynesbough, Tennessee. All were married and
had families, except the two girls who had no children. None of the
family remains in Nebraska.
George Baer had one sister who was a school teacher and lived in Los
Angeles, California
