MRS. JAMES [ANASTAZIE BERAN] CHALUPNIK

Anastazie Beran was born to Jan and Veronica (Mlady) Beran on November 25, 1884, in a log cabin on the hill west overlooking Verdigre. As a small child, it was her duty to herd cattle over these hills.

Anastazie received her education in the Verdigre Public Schools, graduating from the eleventh grade. She was also a member of the original St. Wenceslaus Choir. In 1908 Anastazie graduated from the Michigan Business Institute, Kalamazoo, Michigan.

When Anastazie wa a young woman she moved with her parents to Beroun, Minnesota, in 1905. They farmed there for five years before moving back to Verdigre. While living in Minnesota, Anastazie met James J. Chalupnik and they were married August 30, 1909. A short time later they also moved to Verdigre, Nebraska. In 1909-1910 James started a creamery business here. Anastazie worked along with her husband as his bookkeeper.

Always industrious, Anastazie devoted her life to her family and home. She loved flowers and during the dry thirties her rock and flower garden was a show place. In her declining years and frail health, she still managed to tend a simplified flower garden.

Anastazie, the youngest of eight, had three brothers: Vaclav, John, and Louis, and four sisters” Marie Jedlicka, Francis Franek, Emma Slama, and Antonia Stoural.

Anastazie and James J. Chalupnik had five children, one son, Henry J. and four daughters: Mrs. John (Marianne) Hospodka and Mrs. Frank (Gertrude) Ulrich of Verdigre, Mrs. Patrick (Beatrice) Collins of San Francisco, California, and Mrs. William M. (Lilllian) Swoboda of Battle Creek, Nebraska.

In 1972 Anastazie wa buried at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery which was once part of her family’s homestead where she worked and played as a child. At the time of her death, there were 27 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
