HARRY AND BLANCHE [Lloyd] BERGER

Blanche (Lloyd) Berger was born January 19, 1906, to Mr. and Mrs. William Lloyd and passed away at the Creighton hospital on December 20, 1971.

On March 26, 1920, she was married to Harry Berger at the Methodist Church at Creighton, Nebraska. For three years they farmed near Sparta and did their buying at the old Sparta Store. Then they moved to a farm north of Winnetoon where they lived for 14 years. Later they moved south of Verdigre where Harry lived and worked on a farm for Bill Bruce. When Bill passed away the farm was sold and, as work was scarce and times hard, Harry went to Seattle, Washington, where he had two brothers-in-law. There he found work in the shipyards. He also milked 60-plus cows by hand twice a day.

Harry often times talked of losing all his fingernails from so much work and told of all the pain.

They lived in Washington for four years and returned to Verdigre where they lived for 27 years. Harry’s dream was to own his own home, and, upon returning to Verdigre, he bought the farm on which Frank and Barbara Maly had lived. Harry and Blanche lived here for 27 years.

On July 1, 1966, Blanche became ill and was hospitalized at the Lundberg Memorial hospital in Creighton, Nebraska. She then entered the Creighton Care Centre and remained there until her death in 1971.

Harry remained on the farm even though his health wasn’t good. He did an outstanding job of raising hogs and commented that he was one of the first to sell fat hogs at Verdigre when the sale barn was built. Harry was a great inspiration to his grandson, Jimmy Maly, and they spent a lot of time together.

Harry and Blanche were blessed with three children: Marjorie, Donna and Jack; grandchildren: Mrs. Larry (Kathy) Masat, Kenneth Maly, Jim Maly, Timorhy Woodhead, Mark Woodhead of Tacoma, Washington, Michael and Mark Berger of Washington, D.C., great-grandchildren Kevin, Trenton, Kinsey, and Tanner Maly and Jack, Lance and Jason Masat.

Harry passed away in 1975.
