FRANK E. AND HARRIET [ADAMS] BUTTERFIELD

Frank E. Butterfield’s parents, Ed and Sarah Casteel Butterfield, were married in 1857. They lived most of their years in Nebraska, a few of them in Verdigre. They had the Walnut switchboard in their home for many years. Sarah was known for the good bread she baked.

Frank was born May 13, 1872, in Buchanan County, Iowa. When he was nine years old, he came to Nebraska with his parents who settled on a farm near the Walnut post office.

On November 18, 1893, Frank E. married Harriet Ada Adams. She was born in Johnson County, Iowa, on October 16, 1875. They lived at Walnut until 1940 when they moved into Orchard, Nebraska.

When F. E. (many people called Frank “F.E.”) and “Ada” lived near Walnut, they farmed, milked cows, and raised hogs. F. E. started to carry rural mail from Walnut in 1908 and retired from this job in March of 1937.

F. E. joined the Masonic Lodge No. 100 in Creighton on May 7, 1904. He was presented his 50-year pin and Jordon Medal on June 1, 1954. F. E. was a member of the EUB Church in Orchard.

To this union nine children were born: Chloe Smith (deceased), Hazel Smith (deceased), Leafa Berner of Norfolk, Laura Phillips (deceased), Elsie Hildreth of Royal, Floyd of Norfolk, Eunice Mitteis of Royal, Edwin (deceased), and Thelma Boelter Storm of Orchard.

Ada passed away on April 17, 1942, and F. E. passed away on September 27, 1958. They are buried in the Enterprise Cemetery.
