TERRANCE AND NETTIE [SCRIVEN] CAULFIELD
Terrance Caulfield, son of Andrew and Susan Caulfield, was born in
1867 in Galena, Illinois. In the late 1800s his father brought the
family to Knox County where they homesteaded. Andrew was a medical
doctor, but the family farmed. He was one of nine children.
Terrance’s parents came over from Ireland in the 1800s. He was a
member of the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church of Verdigre. Terrance
passed away in 1923.
Terrance married Nettie Scriven of Chambers, Nebraska, on November
25, 1912, at St. Wenceslaus Church. To this union were born seven
children: Margaret, James, Gregory, Terrance,
John, Alma, and Raymond.
Margaret, who married Herbert Brockmoller and had two children, has
lived all her life in Nebraska. She now resides in Scribner,
Nebraska.
James married Betty Pound, and they lived all their life in
Nebraska. They had two children.
Gregory was killed in World War II.
Terrance married Frances Hemeway; they raised ten sons and lived in
Oregon.
John married Hilda Behnks and they had three children. They lived in
Washington.
Alma died as an infant in 1924.
Raymond married Juletta Crabtree and raised three children. They
lived in Oregon. He died of a massive heart attack, in 1983 and
Juletta died in 1986 of cancer.
James, Gregory, John, and Raymond all enlisted and served in World
War II, and all were wounded in service. Gregory was killed on
February 4 in the campaign for the Marshall Island. He was wounded
at 11:00PlM. and fought until the end of the battle on February 3,
1944. He was given communion by the priest at 6:00 in the morning
and died. Gregory was shot seven times through the face and body.
Alma, Gregory, and Terrance and Nettie rest in the Catholic church
cemetery at Verdigre.
