ANTON J. AND SHIRLEY CHOCHOLOUSEK
Anton J. Chocholousek was born living, and was named
after his grandfather. Anton, better known as Tony, attended Verdigre School and after graduation went to St. Louis, Missouri,
where he worked for one year. In 1943 he joined the United States
Navy where he was a member of the Seabees. After discharge in 1946,
Tony returned to Verdigre and he and Alan Schreier did carpentry and
cement work for two years. During the severe blizzard of 1948 Tony
and Alan set up and operated a twenty-four-hour-a-day café in the

removal crews. Tony and Spencer Stephens worked together for the
next two years doing carpentry and Tony then worked for Gordon
McElhose driving truck and operating heavy equipment. In 1954 Tony
and Willard Jacot purchased a local tavern and operated in
partnership for two years. In 1956 Tony assumed total ownership of
the business and has operated Tony’s Tavern in Verdigre for 30
years.
Tony married Shirley Cihlar Wycoff on August 9, 1970. In 1971 Tony
became the adoptive father of Shirley’s two children, Valorie and
Steven. Steven married Velda Coover of Verdigre in 1980 and they are
the parents of Kyla Jean, born living, and Kelli Marie,
born living. Valorie married Scott Vadnais of Omaha in
1981, and they are the parents of a son, Jesse, born living.
