DELBERT AND CLARA [PAVELKA] DARNELL
Delbert Calvin Darnell, son of George and Hester (Hewitt) Darnell,
was born July 28, 1919. He died January 17, 1945, in the “Battle of
the Bulge” in France in WWII and was buried in Luxembourg. After the
war he was removed to Ft. McPherson National Cemetery, Maxwell,
Nebraska, with reinterment on March 29, 1949
Delbert received his education in the Knox County schools. He then
served in the CCC at Valentine, Nebraska, returning to Verdigre
where he was employed for an extended time at the Ak-Sar-Ben
Hatchery. He also followed the grain harvest into South Dakota for a
season.
On January 28, 1941, “Deb” entered the U. S. army, being the first
man to enlist from Knox County. In September of 1944 he was shipped
overseas to the ETO. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant.
Delbert Darnell married Clara Pavelka on April 14, 1943, at Camp
Campbell, Kentucky. He has one daughter, Karen Kay Darnell, who was
born in Kentucky. Karen was married in 1964 to Leon Henrichs. They
reside in Kasson, Minnesota, where she operates a Day Care Center
and Mr. Henrichs works for M.B.A.. Their four children and birth
dates are: Ronald Lee, living; Randee Kay, living; Robert Lynn,
living; Reid Patrick, living.
