JOSEPH AND ELSIE [HAZEN] HEINS
Joseph Heins, the son of Joseph, Sr., and Mary A. Preslicka Heins,
was born in Sauk Center, Minnesota, in 1891. In 1896 his father
died. His mother then moved to Verdigre, Nebraska, with Joseph and
his brother Henry. On October 20, 1899, Mrs. Heins married John
Pavlik, Sr. She subsequently had two sons, Harry and Emon, who were
Joseph’s half-brothers.
In Verdigre Joseph attended the public schools. He became the
publisher of the Verdigre Citizen. From 1917 on he owned and
operated the Empress Theater. For six years he served as the leader
of the Verdigre Military Band.

He was the organizer and leader of the Verdigre Military Orchestra
and later of the Verdigre Junior Military Band. In the early
twenties he operated a radio, electric, and music shop in the town.
Among the organizations to which he belonged was the ZCBJ of which
he was a 50-year member.
Joseph Heins’ wife was Elsie Mae Hazen, daughter of Dr. and Mrs.
William Hazen of Creighton. (She was born May 21, 1892, and died
March 3, 1981) She taught school in Creighton and then at Verdigre
High School. The couple had three children: Elda, Joseph, Jr., and
Robert.
In the middle twenties the Heinses moved to California. While Mrs.
Heins became a real estate broker, Joseph continued in the newspaper
field as a linotype operator. He worked for the Daily Breeze of
Redondo, California, for ten years before retiring to Lucerne Valley
in 1960. He died there January 1, 1964.
