JOHN AND CYRILLA [RUDA] HOLAN
John Holan was born on the homestead of his father, Frank Holan, the
pioneer, on July 10, 1878. He married Cyrilla Ann Ruda of Atwood,
Kansas on September 14, 1909. They had one son and two daughters,
Martha, Vac J., and Edith, all of whom were born and raised on the
original homestead of their grandfather, Frank Holan, the pioneer.
Martha married Leonard Sukup on June 14, 1938, and they had three
children: Ethel, Rosalie, and Richard. (See Leonard and Marth Sukup
history.)
Vac J. Holan farmed on the family homestead until 1974 when he
retired to Verdige.
Edith (Holan) Vaca attended Wayne Normal School and taught for nine
years in Knox County schools. She married Frank Vaca and lives in
Omaha. Frank is a retired Union Pacific Railroad employee and a
World War II veteran who served overseas wit the Army Medics in
England. They have thee children: Jerry, Maxine, and Margaret. Jerry
Vaca and his wife Sharon have two daughters, Cheryl and Teresa.
Maxine Vaca, single, works for the U. S. Defense in West Germany.
Jerry Vaca is also in West Germany in the U. S. Defense Department.
Margaret (Vaca) Oldham is married to Tom Oldham, an Air Force
Sergeant, also in West Germany.
John Holan died April 29, 1954. Cyrilla Ann died September 18, 1966.
They are buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Verdigre, Nebraska.
John Holan lived on his father’s homestead from 1878 to 1954. Some
time before that John Holan deeded the farm to their son Vac J.
Holan, who lived there from 1913 to 1974. Then Vac retired to
Verdige and sold the Holan homestead. This homestead has been in the
same Holan family for over 97 years.
