ANNA JELEN

[pg 283 PHOTO Anna Jelen]

Anna Jelen, the second child of Vaclav and Antonia Jelen, was born in Bohemia on September 16, 1875. At the age of three years, she came with her parents, brother, and sister to the United States. The family settled in Omaha.

After a stay of three years in Omaha, the family came to Holt County where they remained for eight years. Anna attended a rural district school. This became the very foundation of her teaching career.

In 1889 Anna came to Knox County with her parents, brothers, and sister and they located on a farm eight miles northwest of Verdigre.

Later Anna attended Creighton High School and in three years she graduated. Then she attended Fremont College and later the Nebraska University where she was granted the B. A. degree.

Her first teaching job was in 1895 and she then taught nine terms in rural schools in Knox County.

Miss Jelen was assistant principal in the Verdigre Public School, then spent four years as superintendent of the Verdigre school.

From Verdigre she went to Douglas, Wyoming, where she served as instructor in the high school. Next she was an instructor in the Casper, Wyoming, normal school. During the last three years of her career as an educator, Miss Jelen served as librarian of the Casper, Wyoming, high school.

After 50 years of patience, courage, and sacrifice to instruct the future generation she retired and went to live with her brother John in Verdigre in 1945.

Her retirement was not of long duration. She became ill and was taken to the hospital where she passed away on October 22, 1948.
