ALBERT AND ALBINA [PAVLIK] JIRACEK

Albert Jiracek came to the United States in approximately 1888 when he was about 13 years old. He came with his parents, Matej and Ludmila Jiracek, brother Joe, and sisters Fannie (Mrs. Jim Tikalsky) and Toni (Mrs. Frank Pavlik) They came from somewhere in Bohemia and were preceded to this country by the oldest son in the family, Vac.

The family settled on a 440-acre farm about four miles southeast of Verdigre. Albert (1875-1943) married Albina Pavlik (1878-1928) in approximately 1896 or 1897 and to this union were born three sons, Edward (1898-1971), Leon (1907-1976), and Charles (1914- )

Albert continued to farm; he raised corn and became an extensive cattle feeder until about 1929 when he moved to Winner, South Dakota, to a 2500-acre winter wheat farm. He remained there until his death in 1943. He is buried at the Riverside Cemetery beside his wife who died in 1928.

The parents, Matej (1846-1919) and Ludmila (1849-1922) are buried at the Bohemian National Cemetery (Jelen).

Eldest son Edward joined Charlie Jecminek sometime in the late 1920s to become the firm of Jecminek-Jiracek Hardware.

This store was on the west side of the street in what now houses part of Jedlicka's Hardware Hank, just south of Sonder's Sundries.

Descendants of Albertvia Edward include: Edward,Jr., of Lincoln, Nebraska, and his daughters, Lynn (Mrs. Dan) Smith, Denver, Colorado; Kim (Mrs. William) Jordeth and her two sons Kai and Brett of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Jenny (Mrs. C. Gene) Riley of Sac City, Iowa; Don Jiracek of Verdigre; Virginia (Mrs. Lee) Barta of Lincoln, Nebraska, and her sons Steve of Millard, Nebraska, and Jim and John, both of Lincoln; Dorothy Sandoz of Sioux City, Iowa, and her children Theresa (Mrs. Curt) Brake of Minot, North Dakota, sons David of Sioux City and Don of Ames, Iowa.

Son Leon died in 1976. He never married and leaves no descendants.

Charlie, the only living son, resides in Murdo, South Dakota, and leaves as his descendants: Sheryl (Mrs. Vernon) Erikson of San Jose, California, and children Colleen and Michael; Carolyn Shannon, also of San Jose, California, and her children Laurel and Shawn; and Bill Jiracek of Cowley, Wyoming, and his children Terry, Kevin and Stacie.

An interesting anecdote as related by Charlie Jiracek is that, though he was only five years old when his grandfather died and doesn't really remember him, the one thing that stuck in his mind was that he wanted to be sure they would bury him with his pipe and some money.
