VACLAV JIRACEK

Vaclav Jiracek was born September 16, 1869, to Mathias and Ludmila Jiracek, in Kosova Hora, Bohemia. The family came to this country about 1886. Mathias brought his wife and children: Vac, Albert, Frances, Joseph, and Antonia. Three other children had died in infancy.

At the time they emigrated to the United States, Vac was sixteen years old. He became a citizen of this country in 1893, being naturalized in Cleveland, Ohio. Having learned the trade of baker in the land of his birth, he was occupied in this trade in the cities of Cleveland, and then Chicago, Illinois.

The family homesteaded about ten miles southwest of Verdigre's present location where they lived until about 1909.

Vaclav married Julia Vanorny of Lesterville, South Dakota, on December 13, 1901. They were married at Tyndall, South Dakota. Six children were born to them: Mrs. Vlasta Dickey, Yankton, South Dakota; Mrs. Sylvia Bromwick, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; George Jiracek, Hood River, Oregon; Elsie Barr, Spencer, Nebraska; Genevieve Carmichael, Wayne, Nebraska; and Vincent Jiracek, Spencer, Nebraska.

In 1904 Vaclav moved with his family to Spencer from Verdigre where he had been in the restaurant business. Here he opened the bakery which he operated until he sold the business to the late John Zidko.

In 1912 he moved to Tripp County, South Dakota, where he homesteaded a piece of ground. He had been a member of the ZCBJ Lodge of Spencer since 1906.

Vaclav died April 5, 1951, at Spencer, Nebraska, at the age of 81 years .
