BRUCE AND CLARA [MILLER] JOHNSON

Bruce Johnson was drafted into the army in November of 1918. He was on the train waiting to leave for camp when the message was received that the Armistice was signed. He received two days pay for army service.

Bruce Johnson and Clara Caroline Miller were married March 1, 1922, in the Presbyterian Parsonage at O’Neill by Rev. Longstaff. Their attendants were David and Thelma Johnson. They lived with Bruce’s parents for one year and then moved to what was known as the “Gonyo place” (where the Bruce McElhaney family resides) for three years. They moved back to the home place and Bruce’s father, Carl, lived with them until his death in 1928. They continued to live there until moving to O’Neill in 1956 where Clara still lives. Bruce died April 29, 1978. He is buried in the O’Neill Cemetery.

All three of their children were born in the same house where Bruce and his brother were born. Walter Bruce was born in living, Clayton Carl in living, and Claryce LaVon in living. All three attended grade school at District 57, the Osborne School, in the same location as the school Carl’s children attended. They all graduated from O’Neill High School. Walter served in the U. S. Army for 21 months in 1952-53, spending one year in Korea. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. Clayton served in the U. S. Army two years, 1954-56.

Walter married Dorothy Howard of Orchard in 1952 and they have lived on a farm north of page since 1956. They have four daughters. Linda Mae married Robert Duncan and they have one daughter, Chareen Fae. Bob Duncan served in the armed forces in Vietnam. Debra Sue married Brian Stevens, and their children are Clesta Rae and Jeremy James. Diane Kay married Curtis Gotschall and their child is Megan Marie. Janet Marie is a teacher.

Clayton married Lois Robertson, Orchard, in 1954, and they have lived on the home place since 1956. Their son, Roger Michael, married Julie Hurt, and they have three children, Shane Bruce, Sarah Elizabeth and Cassandra Marie. Roger’s children are the fifth generation to live on the home place. Clayton and Lois’ son, Daryl, died in infancy.

Claryce married Donald Calkins of O’Neill in 1953. Don served in the U. S. Navy in 1952-56. They have lived in Lincoln since 1956. They have three children. Vonita Lorene married Paul Wood and Kenneth Duane married Lori Rubenking. Timothy David is a student at the University of Nebraska School of Dentistry.
