DAVID AND THELMA [VONASEK] JOHNSON
David Carl Johnson and Thelma Mae Vonasek, both of the Walnut area,
were married February 23, 1921, at O’Neill. Their attendants were
Bruce Johnson and Clara Miller. They began their life together on a
farm known as the “Gonyo Place” (where the Bruce McElhaney family
resides). In 1924 they built the entire farmstead which is located
12 ½ miles west of Verdigre. They continued to live there until
their retirement in 1950. At that time they moved to Creighton,
Nebraska.
They were the parents of four children: Irene Gale, Lysle Glen,
Marvin Wayne, and Howard Lee. The children attended the “Mott
School” and all graduated from Verdigre High School.
Irene married Archie Kreycik at O’Neill in 1941. Irene and Archie
farm in the Niobrara area. They have two daughters, Janice and
Karen. Janice married Dr. Kenneth Liska and they have thee children,
Jason, Eric, and Kimberley. Karen married Roger Kotrous and their
children are Rochelle and Rodney.
Lysle served in the U. S. Army. Lysle married Verna Miller of Star
in O’Neill in 1950. After their marriage, they moved to their farm
in Holt County. They have two sons, Wyn and Larry. Wyn married
Theresa Bennett and they have thee children, Ryan, Tracey, and Kyle.
Larry married Connie Miller. Their children are Lisa, Jean and Joan
(twins), and Cari.
In June of 1947 Marvin married Lavon Spangler of Star in O’Neill.
They started farming on the maternal grandparents’ farm, the Otto
Vonaseks. They still reside there. They have three children: Darvin,
Dawn, and Darla. Darvin was in the U. S. Army from 1969-71, serving
10 ½ months in Korea. He married Lynette Montgomery and their
children are Del, Devin, and Desiree. Dawn married Warren Montgomery
and they have two sons, Travis and Trent. Darla married Roger Hauf
and their daughter is Aimee.
Howard married Betty Auman of Orchard in 1950. They live on the home
place and have thee sons, Gayle, Gary, and Greg.
Thelma Johnson died January 28, 1961, and David died September 7,
1976. Both Thelma and David are buried in the Creighton cemetery.
