JERRY L. AND FLORENCE [ULRICH] KONOPASEK
Jerry Konopasek was born October 11, 1936, to Rudy and Lizzie
Konopasek at Verdigre, Nebraska. He started to school in Verdigre
and then attended the Pleasant Valley School, returning to Verdigre
for four years of high school. He graduated in 1954.
Jerry enlisted in the army and served from February 18, 1955, to
February 15, 1957. During that time he spent two months on an
experimental maneuver in Alaska to see if troops and equipment could
be in fighting condition in the extreme cold.

He served as a cadre for the last eight months, training recruits in
heavy artillery.
After his time in the army, he worked at the Verdigre Livestock
Market and farmed with his dad.
On July 6, 1960, he married Florence Ulrich at St. Wenceslaus Church
in Verdigre and they lived in town for about a year. After that they
lived on several rented farms in the Verdigre area.
A daughter, Christine, was born April 26, 1963, while they were
living on a farm on the south edge of Verdigre owned by Florence’s
grandfather, J. J. Chalupnik.
On July 30, 1964, their daughter Cindy was born and their son Marty
was born May 24, 1968. They were living on the Floyd Bennar farm
when both of these children were born.
Jerry and his family moved to the Tony Paesl farm in August of 1971
and bought this farm in 1973.
Jerry and Florence were both project leaders and club leaders during
the ten years that their children were in 4-H. Jerry served one term
on the Jefferson Township Board and is a member of the ZCBJ Lodge
and the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.
Their daughter Christine went to Wayne State College, is employed by
Northeast Technical Community College as a secretary, and was
married to Terry Kotrous on October 4, 1986.
Their daughter Cindy attended the Nettleton College of Hair Design
in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and has been employed as the manager
of the Regis Beauty Salon in Huron, South Dakota. She will soon be
transferred to Omaha to manage a new Regis Salon at the Crossroads.
Marty graduated in 1986 and is home farming with Jerry. If family
farming doesn’t become a thing of the past, he will continue the
family farming tradition.
