BARBARA ONDRACEK MALY

Barbara Ondracek Maly was born March 15, 1845, in the village of Bozetice, County of Milevsko, State of Tabor, Bohemia. Here in her native land she was reared and grew to womanhood. At the age of 22, in company with a group of emigrants, she came to America, settling at Chicago in 1867. In the new city she readily found employment. Three years later on the 14th of October, 1871, she married Frank Maly. It is a coincidence that on this particular day the great fire of Chicago broke out. Mr. and Mrs. Maly assisted many friends and neighbors with moving goods and property to safety.

Seeking new homes in the west as other early pioneers, they came to Knox County, Nebraska, in 1872. They lived with Mrs. Maly’s parents for one years, and then took up a homestead just west of the present Verdigre town site. At that time there was no town, so they built a log cabin. The lumber was hauled from the Niobrara River.

Being truly early pioneers, they both shared their hardships and toils until 1924 when Mr. Maly deeded his land to his youngest son, Vac and family. (Today the land, a mile west of Verdigre, is owned by Dr. James Carlson.)

This union was blessed with nine children, five daughters and four sons, who are mentioned in the following details.

Anastazie Maly was born August 20, 1872, at Chicago, Illinois. Her husband Vaclav Mastalir was born June 25, 1865. They were married October 30, 1890. He died April 4, 1912, and Anastazie died February 4, 1958.

Mary Stoural was born December 25, 1875. On July 8, 1897, she married Albert Stoural, who was born in Chicago in 1873. Mary died July 29, 1958, and Albert died September 9, 1928.

Emil Maly was born April 3, 1877, and died at nine years of age on March 10, 1886.

Frank E. Maly was born August 3, 1879, and died October 15, 1932. He married Hattie M. Forester on June 6, 1905. She died in 1978 in Fullerton, California.
Joe Maly was born in February of 1882 and married Della Overman in 1907. He died March 9, 1930.

Antonia Maly was born May 6, 1884, at Verdigre, Nebraska. Her husband, Frank J. Studeny, was born March 23, 1879, in Breznice, Moravia. They were married October 14, 1902. Antonia died January 7, 1970, at West point, Nebraska, and Frank died May 9, 1964, also at West Point.

Barbara Maly was born May 30, 1886, and married Frank V. Kotrous on August 31, 1909. He was born April 13, 1889, and died January 8, 1975. Barbara died March 1, 1976.

Rose Studeny, youngest daughter of Frank and Barbara Maly, was born August 30, 1890, at Verdigre, Nebraska. She married Fred L. Studeny at Verdigre on April 21, 1914. He was born August 27, 1888, in Box Butte County, six miles west of Hemingford, Nebraska. He died January 19, 1969, at Creighton, and Rose died July 8, 1973, at Lynch, Nebraska.

Vac Maly was born January 6, 1893, and on April 29, 1913, he married Anna Kotrous, born July 12, 1890. She died May 9, 1966, and Vac on April 30, 1967.
