JAMES C. AND JANICE [HOFFMAN] MALY

James C. Maly was born to John and Marie (Grothe) Maly at Creighton, Nebraska. He has two brothers, Tom Maly and Bob Maly, and five sisters, Ruth Wilmes, Virginia Fehringer, Sister M. Susanne Maly, Mary Kay Mlady, and Susan Maly. He graduated from St. Ludger’s High School in Creighton. Following graduation he worked for Pruss and Thomson Construction. He entered the army in March of 1954, and was stationed in Fort Bliss, Texas, and Fort Eustis, Virginia, before going overseas where he was stationed in Japan and Korea.

Janice M. Maly was born near Osmond, Nebraska, to John and Meta (Springer) Hoffman. She has two brothers, Darrell Hoffman and Jack Hoffman, and two sisters, Joyce Neuman and Judy Campagnone. She graduated from Plainview High School and taught school for five years.

Janice’s grandfather, the late Emil Springer of Osmond, was born April 28, 1880, in Fehman, Germany. He came to America at the age of 10 years and for two years lived near Verdigre in the Sparta area. In 1892 he moved to Osmond where he spent the rest of his life.

Jim Maly and Janice Hoffman were married on May 12, 1956, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Plainview. They lived in Creighton where Jim worked for Richard Rice as a Texaco tank wagon driver. He then worked as a substitute rural mail carrier for his father when he became too ill to work. Jim purchased the John Deere business in Verdigre from Walter Dobrichovsky in 1959. They built a home in Verdigre and moved in February 2, 1961. In 1968, Jim sold the John Deere business and purchased “Marshall’s Store,” a grocery store, from Mr. and Mrs. V. W. Marshall. They changed the name of the business to Maly’s Corner Store, and are still in the grocery business.

They have three children; all are graduates of Verdigre High School. Jane married Rodney Bartos. Rod is a farmer and they live northwest of Verdigre. Jane is employed as a secretary-bookkeeper at Verdigre Public School. They are the parents of three children, Nicholas, Derek, and Mandy.

Terry received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln and also successfully completed the requirements to become a Certified Athletic Trainer from the National Athletic Trainer’s Association. He received a Master of Arts Degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and then received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Terry is a Physical Therapist at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Lincoln.

Tim attended Platte Tech Community College in Columbus. He married Elizabeth Kinnison. Tim is a meat cutter at Maly’s Corner Store. Liz attended Kearney State College and now works at Alpine Village and CBS Insurance Company. They are the parents of two children, Brandon and Andrea.

Jim and “Jan” said, “We are proud to be a part of Verdigre’s Centennial.”
