ALBERT AND MARY [SLADEK] MASAT, JR.

Albert Masat, Jr., was born April 23, 1882, in the county of Prestrichehu, Bohemia. As an infant, he accompanied his parents, Albert, Sr., and Anna (Slice) Masat, to America. They came directly to Knox County and settled on a homestead four miles east of Verdigre where he spent the rest of his life except for seven years when he lived on an adjoining farm. After his dad’s retirement, he took charge of the homestead.

On April 12, 1904, he married Mary J. Sladek at St. Wenceslaus Church. They had five children: Albert III, who was killed in a horse accident at the age of 14; Charles H., who died in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, in 1974; George A., still living in the Verdigre area; Benedict F., who died in February of 1981; and Marie, who died at her home at the age of three when she fell into a tub of scalding wash water.

Albert and his sons farmed the land and enjoyed raising livestock. A fencing accident which cut his lip and eventually turned cancerous claimed his life on May 8, 1936, at the age of 54. Father Oborny had the services. Interment was in the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery. Mary died at her home in January of 1966 at the age of 82.
