WALTER AND ESTHER [KURKA] MC ELHOSE

A descendant of this couple was Walter McElhose, born June 19, 1910, and died November 1, 1976, of a heart attack.

On July 31, 1935, Walter married Esther Kurka (born March 24, 1918), daughter of Ernest and Albina (Schreier) Kurka. They lived one year in the Walnut vicinity and 1 ½ years on the former Ernest Soucek farm. Then they moved to a Stoney Butte farm, the home of Esther’s parents, where they lived until Walter’s death. Walter enjoyed farming and raising cattle and was Knox County Supervisor from 1966 until his death.

Walter and Esther had three children: Ardith, Kenneth, and Karen.

Ardith Arlene, born living, married Arnold Miller, son of Ewalt and Myrtle (Boelter) Miller, on June 22, 1958. They live on a farm ten miles west of Verdigre, Nebraska. They have four children: Steven, born living, who married Kathy Frank, daughter of Vernon and Helen Frank, on June 13, 1981. They have one son, Lucas, born living. They live in Columbus, Nebraska. Kathy works for an insurance company and Steven works at the Columbus Bank and Trust Company.

Darrel Miller, born living, married Ann Van Brocklin on June 1, 1985. They live in Lincoln, Nebraska, where Ann is studying to be a radiology technician and Darrel has employment.

Jill Miller, born on living, is going to Wayne State College and has part-time employment there.

Russell Miller, born living, is attending high school at Verdigre.

The second child of Walter and Esther McElhose is Kenneth Ray who was born living. He lives in Lincoln where he has been a pharmacist at Four Star Drug for the past 20 years. He married Alice Morehouse on April 9, 1966. Alice has a daughter, Erin, by a previous marriage. Alice’s parents are Dick and Ruth Catlett of Lincoln. Kenneth and Alice have two daughters: Coleen and Tara. Coleen Ann, born living, is attending the University of Nebraska and has part-time employment at Four Star Drug. Tara Lyn, born living, is attending high school and takes dancing lessons.

Karen Faye is their third child. She was born living, and married Alan Sonder on October 25, 1970. He is the son of Vernon and Marceline (Dvorak) Sonder. They live in Verdigre where they own and operate Sonder’s Sundries, formerly the Bates’ Store, which they purchased in 1973. In 1977 they purchased Kind’s Variety Store in Creighton and they also own and operate that at this time. Alan works in the Verdigre Post Office as postal clerk. They have four sons: Jay Walter, born living; Jared Jon, living; Joel Thomas, living; and Justin Cole, living.

After the death of Walter in 1976, his wife married Donald H. Pittack on January 2, 1979. They reside in Verdigre. Donald, known by his family and friends as “Pat,” was born living, in the Meadow Grove, Nebraska, vicinity to Ernest and Hulda Pittack. He is one of nine children, one sister being deceased.
