DR. JOHN J. MELVIN

Dr. John J. Melvin served as physician in Verdigre during the years of 1927 to 1937. He was a native of Martinsburg,

Nebraska, born on Good Friday, March 26, 1902. He was a graduate of Creighton University. He married Neva Hill, a native of Temple, Texas, on December 1, 1929. They had one daughter, Mary Catherine, born in Verdigre in 1934.

Dr. Melvin’s mother, Kate Melvin, of Martinsburg, was a frequent and a well-remembered visitor to our town.

While he was a resident of Verdigre, he took an active part in civic and community affairs. He was a member of the board of education and chairman of the Verdigre Improvement Club for several years.

The Melvins left Verdigre in 1937 for Chicago, where Doctor took post-graduate work in medicine and surgery at the Cook County Hospital. They moved on to Oakland, California, where he graduated from the University of California in 1946.

Dr. Melvin died of a heart attack on Easter Sunday morning, April 6, 1947.
