ANDREW AND LUCY [MECKE] MEYER
Andrew Meyer, son of Henry and Anna Gruenberg Meyer, was born in
1901. Lucy Mecke was born in 1908. They were married May 20, 1929,
at St. Ludger’s Catholic Church at Creighton, Nebraska. Andrew and
Lucy continued to farm on the Meyer homestead 6 ½ miles west of
Winnetoon.
Despite drouth, hail, flash floods, and severe snow storms, the
blizzard of 1948-1949 seemed to be the disaster that will be
remembered. No way could they get out to get fuel or food. They will
never forget when the army sent out patrols and drivers to open the
roads.
Six daughters were born to this couple: Evelyn, Eva, Delores,
Gertrude, JoAnn, and Phyllis.
As the family grew up they attended rural schools and then high
school in Verdigre and Creighton.
Many summer hours were spent in the garden. All will remember the
times the family went on picnics, fishing, the Fourth of July
celebrations and activities of the county fairs.
They were members of St. Wenceslaus Church. Andrew was a life-long
member.
Andrew and Lucy retired in November of 1965 to their home in
Verdigre. She passed away May 9, 1982. On March 15, 1986, daughter
Mrs. Marvin (Gertrude) Ruzicka passed away. Andrew died October 4,
1986.
Surviving are their children: Mrs. Dean (Evelyn) Pierce of Verdigre,
Mrs. Robert (Eva) Ruzicka of O’Neill, Mrs. Richard (Delores) Schmit
of Osmond. Mrs. Jerome (JoAnn) Gubbels of McLean, and Mrs. Micheal
(Phyllis) Cannon of Wandbridge, England, son-in-law Marvin Ruzicka
of Wakefield, 33 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
