ERNEST AND HULDA [ECKERT] MILLER
Ernest August Miller, a native of West Prussia, was born May 9,
1872. He came to America as an infant with his parents, Gustav and
Mina (Whitwer) Miller. They sailed from Hamburg to Baltimore,
spending 10 weeks on the ocean. After nine months in St. Louis, they
came west to Nebraska, locating on a farm near Hoskins where Ernest
grew to manhood.
He married Hulda Erika Eckert of Stanton, Nebraska, on April 27,
1896. Hulda was born August 27, 1878, to Julius and Augusta (Shultz)
Eckert. Ernest and Hulda resided near Hoskins until 1912 when they
moved with their family of eight children to a home he built in Knox
County, Nebraska. Their home was located 13 miles west of Verdigre
and down the lane to the north on the north side of the North Branch
Creek. They later built a home across the creek to the south. This
place was known as the Walnut Hill Ranch. They both lived there
until their deaths. Ernest passed away in his home June 16, 1950,
and Hulda died at the Creighton hospital on April 23, 1963.
