EDWARD AND ANASTAZIE [PAVELKA] MLADY
Edward H. Mlady was born June 12, 1881, on the family homestead
southwest of Verdigre, Nebraska. His wife, Anastazia Pavelka, was
born August 22, 1884, on a farm northeast of Verdigre. She was the
oldest of eight children and attended school at District 51 when it
was in session three-to-four months of the year. Later she attended
the Niobrara School and worked in the home of Dr. Clark for her room
and board. Then she was employed at Koster Hotel with her hours
being from four in the morning until midnight while the railroad
bridges were being put in. Her wage was $2.00 a week.
Edward and Anastazia were married August 16, 1902, at St. Wenceslaus
Catholic Church of Verdigre. To this union were born four children.
Clara was born December 13, 1905, and married Leonard “Red” Drobny
on June 24, 1931; Helen was born July 1, 1911, and married Henry
Chalupnik on July 31, 1935; Leo, born April 22, 1918, married Elsie
Mott on June 4, 1947; and Adelbert was born July 23, 1919.
In Edward’s early years, he carried the trade of carpenter and mason
and the results of these activities still abound in this part of
Knox County. In 1918, he left the building trades and turned to
farming. Edward and Anastazia farmed land in the Northwest Quarter
of Section 32 of Sparta Township. Since Edward was a carpenter, he
and Anastazia built all the farm buildings themselves and Anastazia
even helped shingle the barn while wearing her full skirts! Their
son, Leo, now farms this land.

Edward filed with the Nebraska State Board of Veterinary Medicine
and received his veterinary permit on January 6, 1916, serving as
veterinarian for the farmers of the Verdigre area.
After Edward’s death on January 9, 1945, Anastazia lived with her
son, Delbert. Later she moved to the Czech Alps Terrace, and then
Alpine Village.
Anastazia was a faithful member of the St. Wenceslaus Catholic
Church, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and the Legion
Auxiliary. She enjoyed working with the organizations at social
functions, making kolaches, and sewing coats and booties for the
children of the missions.
Anastazia passed away on September 17, 1980, at Verdigre, at the age
of 96 years. She was laid to rest beside her husband at the Catholic
Church Cemetery west of Verdigre.
