HARVEY AND ELLA [BUTTERFIELD] MONTGOMERY

Harvey F. Montgomery was one of eight children born to Alfred and Nancy (Thompson) Montgomery, who married around 1846 at Alexis, Illinois. Their children were James, John William, Joseph, Sarah Martha, Elizabeth Almina, Harvey F., Lorenzo Dow, and Frank.

Harvey and two of his brothers, John and Lorenzo, came to Nebraska from Illinois about 1882. John settled at York and Lorenzo homesteaded at Ewing. Harvey F. homesteaded the North Half of the Northeast Quarter of Section 18 and the North Half of the Northwest Quarter of Section 17 of Logan Township in the Walnut Grove community of Knox County. He married Ella Butterfield, daughter of Justin C. and Jane (Auten) Butterfield, July 22, 1886. She had been the first teacher at Verdigris Bridge in 1881. Their son, Lee, was born March 8, 1887. Ella died June 20, 1889, at 21 years of age and was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Bazile Mills.

On June 6, 1891, Harvey married Cora Butterfield, a younger sister of Ella. Three children were born to this union: Ray, Charley, and Ella (Mrs. Orville Butterfield). They lived on their homestead 27 years before moving to Creighton. They enjoyed 52 years of married life. Mrs. Montgomery died in 1943 and her husband in 1946. Both are buried at the Hope (Enterprise) Cemetery near Venus.

“Harv” Montgomery will be remembered for his black coin purse in which he always carried his silver coins, as those no-good green backs weren’t for him!

A grandson, Bernard Montgomery, now owns this homestead which has been in the family nearly 100 years.
