James Mott was a farmer and farmed in the Walnut community for 34
years before moving to Verdigre. Here he owned 200 acres in Walnut
Grove and Washington Townships. This acreage consisted of 120 acres
in the Northwest Quarter of Section 28 in Walnut Grove Township and
80 acres in the North Half of the Southeast Quarter of Section 18 in
Washington Township. During this time he served as road overseer,
was on the AAA Farm Program, and served as secretary-treasurer of
the Farmer’s Co-op until he became too ill.
On March 24, 1929, James was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s
Lutheran Church at Venus, Nebraska. He then became a charter member
of the church and served as secretary. Julia was also a charter
member of the church and a member of the ladies aid.
James and Julia later moved to Verdigre and lived in the house where
Julia’s parents, Joseph and Anna Jelinek, lived. While living in
Verdigre, James was employed with the Farmer’s Co-op for a number of
years.
On March 30, 1960, James and Julia celebrated their Golden Wedding
Anniversary.
James passed away on November 30, 1963, after a long illness. Julia,
a very loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and
great-grandmother, passed away October 7, 1978, at the age of 88
years. For the last few years of her life, she resided at Alpine
Village.
James and Julia were laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery east of
