BEN AND MILDRED [JANICEK] ROUBICEK
Ben Roubicek was born in 1893 in Bobnice, Bohemia. In 1913 he came
to the United States. He went to work and then when the United
States entered World War I, he served as a member of the American
armed forces.
In 1918 he married Mildred Janicek. Mildred, daughter of Frank and
Frances Janicek, Bohemian immigrants, was born on a homestead farm
near Burwell on August 20, 1898. There were three children, Carl
(deceased), Evelyn (Donley), and Frank.
Ben operated a meat market first at Taylor, Nebraska, and then at
Timber Lake, South Dakota.
In 1923 the Roubiceks moved to Verdigre where Ben operated a meat
market most of the time until 1942. Several times during this period
he rented out the market and concentrated on raising and feeding
cattle on one of his farms, only to start in again as a butcher. In
1928 he built the shop on the north side of Sunder’s Sundries (then
Bates’ Drugs), though he was not the first person to operate a meat
market in it.
Ben died in retirement July 12, 1972, and Mildred died January 15,
1985, at the Good Samaritan Home in Bloomfield.
