ERNEST C. AND MINNIE [STOURAL] SANDOZ

Ernest C. Sandoz, son of Camille and Rosina Sandoz, was born February 13, 1882, in Neuchatel, Switzerland. In 1884 he came to this country with his parents and family. Their decisions to emigrate and come to this country were doubtless influenced by letters from Jules Sandoz, who was from the Neuchatel area and probably a distant relative of theirs.

On October 11, 1904, Ernest C. Sandoz married Minnie Stoural. Minnie, a daughter of Thomas C. and Antonia Divis Stoural, was born May 24, 1885, at Verdigre. Five children were born to the couple: Delbert, who died in infancy, Helen (Mrs. Roy Barta), Edmund, Leonard, and Lawrence.

The Sandozes lived in Verdigre for most of their lives. Ernest was at times a barber, a drayline operator, hotel keeper (he was the proprietor of the Commercial Hotel about 1908), partner in hardware and implements with his brother Fred, and finally an automobile dealer. It was the Sandoz brothers who put up the big building at the south end of Block 18.

When the depression finished off his business, he became a star route mail carrier in Center and custodian of the Knox County courthouse. He was finally forced by ill health to resign from this job. He died September 1, 1962.

Ernest was an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus, Third Degree, and a retired member of the Verdigre Volunteer Fire Department at the time of his death.

Minnie continued to live in Verdigre after her husband’s demise, dying November 7, 1970.
