EMIL P. AND ALICE [SANDOZ] SCHREIER

Emil P. Schreier was born in Verdigre June 26, 1891. After attending Wayne Normal, he received a degree from the College of Architecture of the University of Illinois. Drafted in 1917, he served in the quartermaster corps at Camp Funston, Kansas, attaining the rank of sergeant.

At the end of the First World War, Emil P. Schreier, popularly called Mike, returned to Verdigre. On June 18, 1919, he married Alice Sandoz (June 5, 1891-October 9, 1985), daughter of Camille and Rosalie Klopfenstein Sandoz and sister of his brother-in-law Sam Sandoz. He then built a home for himself in the newly-opened Jelinek’s Second Addition.

During the twenties he was engaged in architectural and contractor’s work not only in Verdigre but in Bonesteel, South Dakota, and Norfolk, among other places. The first of his major projects was the new St. Wenceslaus Church in 1915. Others were the one-time Sandoz Garage (now shared by Walt Dobrichovsky and the Verdigre Cooperative Association), the public school, the Verdigre Motor Company garage and, much later, Pavlik’s service station. Somehow he found time to operate the first hatchery in Verdigre in his garage.

In the early thirties Emil P. Schreier was the architect and contractor in the PWA construction of the courthouse at Center. In 1935 he went out to western Nebraska where he served as PWA engineer on irrigation construction projects. Subsequently he was in Omaha as engineer on the North Omaha PWA federal housing project. In 1939 he returned to Verdigre. His last project was as WPA superintendent of construction on projects at Bloomfield. It was while hunting near Bloomfield that he suffered a fatal heart attack on October 16, 1941.

Mrs. Schreier, who carried on the task of raising her sons, died at a very great age.

Emil P. Schreier and Alice Sandoz Schreier had three sons, none of them of age when their father died.

Wilford, born in living, married Rosella Vesely. Their children are Warren, born in living, Kenneth, living, and David, living.

Allen Dale (1925-1983) and his brother Charles briefly operated a clothing store after World War II in the present Sonder Well building. On January 2, 1952, he took over the operation of a café from Lyle Mlady and operated it until May 1, 1953. Subsequently he left Verdigre. On February 18, 1952, he married Geraldine Huigens. There was one child, Lori, born in living.

Charles, born in living, was subsequently associated for years with his cousin Lawrence Sandoz in the operation of S & S Service, a filling station and feed service. On August 11, 1948, he married Enid Belka, daughter of Albert and Mildred Wirth Belka. Enid is the school librarian. They have three children, Linda, born living; Suzanne, born living; and Larry, born living.
