ANTON AND JOSEPHINE [PERLIK] SLADEK
Anton Sladek, Sr., emigrated with his wife, Josephine Perlik, from
Europe and settled in Colfax County. They lived there for some time,
later moving to Knox County. They settled in Logan Township, 14
miles west of Creighton, Nebraska, and they had eight children:
Michael, John, Sr., Anton, Jr., Joseph, Sr., Frank, Lewis, Mary, and
Anna.
Michael married Katerine Kocer and they lived in Schuyler, Nebraska.
They had six children: Fred, Christine, William, Rosalie, Charles,
and Henry. They lived on a farm 14 miles west and 2 south of
Creighton.
John, Sr., married Julia Kolena and they had seven children: Ladik,
Steve, John, Jr., Helen, Cecelia, Marie, and George. Ladik died in
1965. Steve married Margaret Pribil and lived for a time in Amelia.
They had four children. Steve passed away in 1986. Dean lives in
Edgar. Edward lives in Chambers, taking over the home place after
his folks retired and moved to O’Neill. Lavonne lives in Ponca City,
Oklahoma, and Lois lives in Kokomo, Indiana. John, Jr., died at an
early age in 1924. Helen married Walter Pokorny and they have three
children. Elsie Smith and Edith (Mrs. Ronald Aschoff) both live in
Osmond, and Donald lives in Atkinson. Cecelia married Harry Peters
and they have three children. George never married and lived on the
ranch his mother owned. John, Sr., and Julia Sladek lived on a farm
eight miles southwest of Verdigre until John passed away in 1924.
Julia and her family lived in Creighton for a number of years before
settling in Holt County.
Anton Sladek, Jr., married Minnie Wagner, but she passed away in
childbirth and both she and the baby were buried in the same casket,
an event recalled with great sadness by the families. Later Anton,
Jr., married Anna Tomek of Pierce, and they had one child, Leo, who
lives in Arizona.
Joseph Sladek, Sr., married Anna Kripner and they had four children:
Joseph, Jr., who passed away September 10, 1984; Thomas who lives in
Creighton, and Henry who lives in Columbus.. Mary remained single
and lived in the Czech Alps in Verdigre until she passed away on
April 29, 1981.
Frank married Anna Mudra and farmed southwest of Verdigre. They had
three children: Frank, Jr., who died in 1920 at the age of 17, and
two daughters, Agnes (Mrs. Paul Stoural) and Lillian (Mrs. Stanley
Wagner).
Lewis married Nellie Smith and lived in Creighton, Nebraska. They
had three children: Ivan who lives in California and twins Victor
and Vera, who live in Hastings, Nebraska.
Anna married William Proneke in 1897. He passed away in 1901. They
had two children: Cecelia and a baby who died in infancy. Cecelia,
who married Dean Klimich and worked at the Kehaven Nursing Home in
Neligh, passed away December 23, 1983. Anna married Frank Shefl
November 16, 1903, and they had six children. Frank, Jr., married
Victoria Jedlicka May 1, 1923, and they lived on a ranch at O’Neill.
They have two sons, Frank III, and Michael, who lives in Blair.
Charles was killed in the oil fields of Wyoming August 1, 1930.
Anton married Marie Dufek April 8, 1947, and they have four
children: Paul married Karen Novacek; Leonard married Mary Hassman,
and Rose and Kathryn are at home. James married Grace Klimes
September 6, 1955, and they live on the home place. They had three
children: Cecelia who lives in Neligh; Philip, single, works at home
and helps with the family business operating the implement Shop, and
Bernard, who was killed in a truck accident near Springfield,
Illinois, in November, 1984. Anna joined the Benedictine Order at
Yankton in 1934, taking the name of Sister Leah. She taught in the
Indian Missions in various places and celebrated her Golden
Anniversary in 1984. She lives in retirement at the Sacred Heart
Convent in Yankton, South Dakota. Frank Shefl, Sr., died in 1962 and
Anna in 1958.
Mary married Albert Masat, Sr., and they lived two miles east of
Verdigre. They were the parents of five children. Albert, Jr., was
killed at 14 years of age while working in the field with four head
of horses and had a runaway. He fell in front of the disc and was
badly mangled. He was taken to the doctor but he died before they
arrived. Charles worked in Scottsbluff at various jobs and died at
an early age. George worked in Colorado and came back to help his
mother farm after his father’s death. George never married and the
home place has been sold. George lives in Niobrara. Ben married Rose
Vakoc and lived in Scottsbluff. He worked in the beet fields awhile
and later was engaged in wheat and potato farming. They have three
children: Larry married Kathy Maly and they live in Verdigre;
Patricia lives in Minneapolis, and Mary Ann lives in Verdigre. Both
Ben and Rose are deceased. Marie died at an early age. She fell into
boiling water and was scalded to death.
Mary Sladek Masat died January 13, 1966.
