ALBERT J. AND MARY [MALY] STOURAL

Albert J. Stoural was born in Chicago on July 12, 1873, to Albert and Katherine {Zarhorka) Stoural.

The following year his parents, twelve-year-old half-brother Thomas, little Albert and other brothers and sisters, came to Nebraska and filed on a homestead in Section 4 of Verdigre Township east of the Verdigris Valley. Years later, a brother Felix and sister Barbara Schmidt homesteaded there and lived until Felix died in 1960.

Albert had four brothers and six sisters.

On July 8, 1897, he was united in marriage to Mary Maly, the daughter of Frank and Barbara (Ondracek) Maly, by the Rev. Joseph Macourek at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Together they took up farming two miles southeast of Verdigre. They endured the many hardships of all pioneers dedicated to the land and its resources, building up a good productive land and livestock which they took such pride in raising.

In 1915, among other dedicated, unselfish pioneers, Albert donated hour upon hour of time and labor with a team of horses excavating dirt for the new church which his family and descendants worship in today.

One of the beautiful church windows, which has the inscription “Vojtech and Marie Stoural” was donated by them - a great memorial for the family.

Albert and Mary’s love and devotion to their family carried over into the community’s needs through the years.

They were blessed with five children: Mrs. Eugene (Minnie Kosek, was born April 19, 1898, and died April 30, 1976; Adam was born December 14, 1902, and died September 19, 1961; Paul and William, twins, were born August 2, 1900. Paul died February 5, 1959, and William died June 8, 1984; and John was born July 26, 1912. Today John and his wife Mary Ann are living on the farm where he was born and has lived his entire life.

On September 9, 1928, Albert died at 55 years of age. Mary continued to live on the farm with her son John until her death on July 29, 1958.

Both Albert and Mary, who live in our memories, are resting in the Catholic Cemetery west of Verdigre.
