JOSEPH AND ANNA [SOUHRADA] SUCHA
Joseph Sucha found his way to Verdigre in 1889. Born in Volduch,
Bohemia, on October 2, 1864, he had come to America at 15 years of
age. He worked at first as a mason. After his marriage to Anna
Souhrada in 1890, he farmed for a year.
Anna, a daughter of Frank and Anna Jedlicka Souhrada, was born in
Chicago November 26, 1871. In 1875 the Souhrada family took up a
homestead near the present town of Verdigre. The Suchas had four
children, Joseph, Jr., Edward, Martha (Mrs. Louis F. Leuck) and
Eleanor (Mrs. V. W. .Marshall).
The next year the couple moved into Verdigre. For a number of years
he operated a store in a small building on Lot 16 of Block 15. He
was a manager of Torpin Grain Co. as long as it was in business. In
later years he managed the Crowell Lumber and Grain Co.
He was a man who belonged to fraternal orders: to the Z.C.B.J.,
M.W.A., W.O.W., and to I.O.O.F., serving each of them in a position
of trust. He was likewise a member of the school board, town board,
and commercial club. For some years, he was clerk of the village of
Verdigre.
He died suddenly January 16, 1915.
After his death Anna Sucha raised her children alone. On January 2,
1924, she married Raimund Schreier, a widower and a brother of John
Schreier, who had married one of her sisters. On April 2, 1941, Anna
died.
