FAMILY OF ANDREW JOHN SUKUP

Andrew John Sukup was the third oldest son of Andrew Sukup and Mary Sedivy Sukup (history elsewhere). He was born July 7, 1883, at his parents’ farm near Walnut, Nebraska.

Andrew J. had six brothers: Joe, John, George, Albert, Henry, and Laurence, and five sisters: Mrs. Joe (Emma) Jelinek, Mrs. Joe (Frances) Skokan, Mrs. Ben (Clara) Tikalsky, Mrs. Maurice (Martha) Dwinell, and Mrs. Lewis (Laura) Frank.

Andy, as he was called, attended rural school in the winter when the fall work was completed. His younger years were spent herding cattle and helping with the farm work. His father, Andrew, was a blacksmith and was kept busy with his trade.

On December 27, 1910, he married Laura R. Olson, at Center, Nebraska. Laura, born April 28, 1889, was the daughter of John and Ellen Johnson Olson who resided hear Royal, Nebraska. Her father was born in Illinois and her mother was born in Sweden. When she was a small child her parents moved to a farm near Wausa, Nebraska, and later to a farm near Bloomfield, Nebraska, where she attended rural school and high school. She received her teaching certificate from Wayne State College.

After Laura and Andy were married, they moved 11 miles southwest of Verdigre onto a farm given to them by his father.

To this union three children were born: Margaret, Frederick, and Arthur.

Margaret Viola was born May 4, 1913, and married Fred E. Dittrick, the son of Fred W. Dittrick and Rose Tikalsky Dittrick on June 23, 1937. They have two children, Patricia Ann and Paul Frederick.

Frederick Andrew was born August 1, 1916. He married Helen Hansen, the daughter of the Louie Hansens, in December of 1938. They had five children: Fred, Jr., Dwight, Gwendolyn, Kathy, and Dean. Helen passed away in 1972.

Arthur John was born February 15, 1919. He married Mary Bryce, the daughter of Thomas Bryce and Elizabeth Buck Bryce. They have twelve children: Dorothy, Tom, Joe, Bill, Ed, Laura, Peter, Roger, Linda, Michael, Andrew, and Steven.

Andy and Laura lived on the farm until January of 1954. At that time Andy’s brother John told them the house across the street from his was for sale and encouraged Andy and Laura to purchase it. They did so and retired at that time. Andy enjoyed fixing watches and clocks, doing yard work, and visiting his brother John. Laura enjoyed her garden and flowers, and making quilts for her grandchildren. Andy died May 26, 1959, and is buried in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery near Verdigre. Laura resided at Alpine Village in Verdigre until her death on December 10, 1986.
