SUKUP BROTHERS - WENZEL AND ANDREW
The Sukup brothers, Wenzel and Andrew, came to the United States
from Bohemia in 1870. After several years of going from place to
place to work, they came to the Walnut area where they filed on
claims in 1874. Maria Sukup, mother of Wenzel and Andrew, came later
from Bohemia to join her sons. Her husband did not accompany her
because of failing eyesight. Her daughters Margareta (later
Burkhardt) and Barbara (Raubach) accompanied her. Maria also filed
on a claim located on the Middle Branch of the Verdigre Creek,
Section 21, Jefferson Township.
Wenzel, the older of the brothers, filed on a claim 1 ½ miles up the
creek from his mother in Section 29. In 1875 he married Barbara
Dusek at Niobrara. Seven children were born to them.
Andrew Sukup’s homestead was located in Section 27, Jefferson
Township. He married Mary Sedivy July 12, 1879. They were the
parents of twelve children: Joseph A. - 1881-1944; John William -
