LAURENCE AND HELEN [FRANK] SUKUP
Laurence Frederick Sukup and Helen Elaine Frank were married June 4,
1929, in a double wedding ceremony with Laurence’s sister, Laura
Sukup, and Helen’s brother, Lewis Frank. The marriage took place at
St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Verdigre.
Laurence and Helen have lived all their married life on their farm
which was homesteaded by his father. They endured all the hardships
and trials of early farm life including drought, grasshoppers, poor
economy, and later a severe hail storm in July of 1984 and a tornado
on April 23, 1985. The latter spared only their house and a couple
of out-buildings. A lifetime of labor and caring was destroyed in a
matter of seconds.
In 1983 they were awarded the Century Farm Award by the Knights of
Ak-Sar-Ben for having kept their land in the family for 100 years.
Laurence Sukup was born January 1, 1904, to Andrew and Mary (Sedivy)
Sukup in the farm home in which he still resides.
