PAUL M. AND MARCELLA [KOTROUS] SUKUP
Paul Matthew Sukup, son of the late Joseph and Lucy Wagner Sukup,
was born July 9, 1917, at Walnut, Nebraska. He started school at
District 26. When he was eight years old, he moved with his family
to Creighton, Nebraska, where he attended school at St. Ludger’s
Academy. After he completed his education, he helped his parents on
the farm. Later he took a class in welding and worked as a welder at
Oakland, California, for several years. In 1943 he returned to
Nebraska where he began farming in partnership with his father on
the farm his grandfather homesteaded.

Paul married Marcella Kotrous on June 5, 1944, at Verdigre,
Nebraska. They were the parents of two daughters and one son:
Virginia, Samuel, and Veronica.
Virginia Mary Sukup, who was born living, married Sherman E. Skala at Norfolk on October 12, 1974. Their two children are James
Ryan and Lisa Kay.
Samuel Paul Sukup, born living, married Carol Barnes on July
29, 1972, at Verdigre. They have three children: Allison Jean, Sara
Jane, and Kyle Adam.
Veronica Ann was born living. She married Paul Dittrick
September 9, 1972, at Verdigre and they have two children, Debi Jo
and Mitchell Paul.
In 1951 Paul purchased the home place from his father and he and his
wife Marcella still reside there. He has purchased adjoining land to
add to the unit. Many improvements have been made on the farm
through the years. For over 35 years Paul has been raising
registered Polled Hereford cattle, the last few years with the help
of his son. Much conservation work has been done and continues. Paul
and Marcella won a conservation award in 1968.
Paul was one of the first to sign up with hopes of getting Rural
Electrification into the country, and it did become a reality on
their farm in August of 1949.
Paul and Marcella consider the worst experience they have had on the
farm as the blizzard of ‘48-’49 when livestock losses were so great
and they were just starting to farm.
They enjoy their family who all live close to them. They have seven
grandchildren.
In 1980 they received the pioneer Farm Family Award from Ak-Sar-Ben
for 100 years of ownership by the Sukup family.
