JOSEPH TOBOLA
Joseph Tobola was born at Krosnof, Bohemia, on February 19, 1872. He
came to the United States in 1891. Most of his life was spent in
Douglas, Dodge, and Knox counties at the bakery trade and farming.
He married Mary Janecek at Dodge in June of 1898. She was born at
Monterey in Cuming County on August 19, 1880. There were three
children of this marriage, Josie (Mrs. William Pischel), Mary (Diez),
and Dr. Raymond Tobola.
In 1915 the Tobolas moved to Verdigre. Joseph operated a bar in the
building south of the ZCBJ Hall. After Nebraska voters ratified
prohibition in the general election of 1916, he changed his
business, closing the saloon on April 30, 1917. He acquired Frank
Bene’s Curio Saloon at the north end of West Main and converted it
into a bakery and café, the White Corner Café and Bakery. He
operated this business until 1924 when he sold it to Frank Simek and
moved to a farm outside of Niobrara.
Mrs. Tobola died March 27, 1939. Joseph’s last years were spent at
the home of his son Raymond at Jackson, Minnesota. He died July 3,
1949.
